Swedish Redwood Timber | Considered the Best Timber in the World…

You may not give much thought to the types of wood used for different products and may even ask, what does it matter? There are so many species of wood that can be used to create structures, decking, furniture and more. Which begs the question – which is the best? Some timber merchants swear by Cedar or Acacia, while others believe that Oak and Teak are the best. While all wood species have their uses and benefits, we at Timber Pro know that Swedish Redwood timber is considered the best timber in the world. This is why, as an independent timber merchant, we offer a variety of superior-quality timber solutions using this elite wood type.

But what is Swedish Redwood timber? How can it be used? How sustainable is it? And what makes it rise above the rest? (Figuratively, as well as literally, as Redwood trees are among the tallest in the world!). Here’s our handy guide to everything you need to know about Swedish Redwood timber…

First things first, what exactly is Swedish Redwood?

Wherever you’re reading this blog, we bet that if you look around you right now, you can find at least five things made of wood. Maybe it’s your desk, interior doors, wooden flooring, your staircase, and even the very bones of the building you’re sitting in. These wooden products didn’t arrive as stairs or beams and would have undoubtedly started their lives growing in a forest or wood somewhere in the world. What you might not know is that the varying material properties of different wood species have a bearing on how they will be used and how well they will perform further down the line. External features such as the thickness, arrangement of the branches and shape, can all influence the final product. Internally, the angle of the trunk and the length of the fibres can also impact the final cut of the wood. That’s why sourcing superior quality wood, generates superior quality results.

Swedish Redwood Pine is a softwood grown in Scandinavia that has fostered a leading reputation for its outstanding quality. Considered the best timber in the world, Swedish Redwood is grown in ideal conditions. The rich Scandinavian soil, cool climate and high-altitude elevation all work synonymously to cultivate timber that is durable, dense, strong, and attractive. Timber from this region is often used for structural beams, structural joists, rafters, and other construction timber, as well as decking, furniture, wooden windows, doors, cladding and mouldings.

Here at Timber Pro, we source our Swedish Redwood from Setra, a leading supplier of high-quality Scandinavian wood products throughout England, Wales, and Scotland. Setra machine and hold stocks of quality Scandinavian planed goods and are responsible for supplying bulk softwood direct from Setra Sawmills in Sweden. This means that when you come to us for premium Swedish Redwood timber, you can trust that it is of superior quality and sustainably sourced, every time.

So, why is timber quality so important?

Within Western Europe, Scandinavia is one of the few countries that can achieve a timber grade of C24. If you work within the construction industry, you’ve likely come across the term C24, but if you’re wondering ‘What is C24?’, here’s everything you need to know.

12 different timber strength grades are used within the construction industry in the UK. These grades are set out by the British Standard in BS5268. When timber is graded against these standards, several measurements are used to assess the strength and condition of the timber.

The measurements used to classify timber strength in this way include:

  • Knots
  • Splits along the grain
  • The slope of the grain
  • Woodworm holes
  • Shape
  • Wane

When grading, the ‘C’ stands for ‘Conifer’ or the type of tree that the timber has come from, whilst the number refers to the strength grade. These guidelines mean that C24 Swedish Redwood is one of the highest quality types of timber available. It is kiln-dried and has fewer defects than other wood species, therefore making it stronger and more resilient. As a bonus, it also looks more elegant and refined than other wood types which is a benefit if the finished product is going to be exposed.

Is Swedish Redwood timber sustainable?

If you are an individual who is conscious of their impact on the planet, then seeking out sustainable ways of living is likely at the top of your list. Here at Timber-Pro Ltd, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously and are proud to work alongside certified suppliers who provide sustainably-sourced timber. Now that you know what Swedish Redwood is, what are its benefits?

With years of experience of working with Swedish Redwood timber, we have seen our timber used by hundreds of satisfied clients for many projects across the UK. Here are some of the benefits that Swedish Redwood timber provides, time and time again, as the best timber in the world…

  • Suitable For Outdoor Use

Swedish Redwood is one of the best types of timber for outdoor use. As the tree produces natural chemicals, it is the gold standard for repelling rot, insects, and moisture. This means that the final product is resistant to cracking and warping and can withstand hot, cold, windy, and wet weather that might otherwise damage the wood.

  • Highly-Resilient

Swedish Redwood is one of the highest-quality types of timber available. Its C24 status means that it has fewer defects than other wood species, therefore making it stronger and more resilient in the long run. This means that it is ideal for use in a range of construction projects as well as for decking, furniture, wooden windows, doors, cladding and mouldings.

  • Lighter & Easier to Construct With

Unlike other timber types, Swedish Redwood is much lighter. This means that it can easily be cut, sawed, and drilled with regular woodworking or carpentry tools. In turn, this will save cost and labour as work can quickly and easily be completed without the use of specialist equipment or knowledge.

  • Aesthetically Pleasing

Swedish Redwood boasts an attractive grain and finish, meaning that it will look outstanding for years to come. It is usually light in colour, with a yellow-brown-reddish tint and paints and varnishes also take nicely to the timber. So, whether it is to be left in its natural condition or not, Swedish Redwood guarantees a smooth and impressive finish.

  • Long-Lasting

Here at Timber Pro, we source our Swedish Redwood from Setra, a leading supplier of high-quality Scandinavian wood products throughout England, Wales, and Scotland. This Swedish Redwood timber is known to last more than 20 years, particularly when cared for and maintained properly.

  • Renewable & Sustainable

Sustainably sourced Swedish Redwood timber is a truly renewable resource. At Timber-Pro Ltd, we responsibly source our Swedish timber from Setra, which supports ongoing replanting. This means that the environmental impact is next to nothing as the material is replaced through replanting.

How do you finish Swedish Redwood?

As independent timber merchants, we have seen our Swedish timber used for a range of applications. We have also seen and given trusted advice on how to finish Swedish Redwood for outstanding results, every time. So, if you’re wondering how to finish Swedish Redwood, here’s everything you need to know.

No-Finish, No-Fuss

As mentioned, Swedish Redwood timber is light in colour, with a yellow-brown-reddish tint that boasts an attractive natural grain and finish. This means that it is a prime example of timber that can be left unfinished for a low-maintenance option. What’s more, as it ages and naturally weathers, Swedish Redwood takes on a highly desirable and authentically rustic look.

Clear Water-Repellent Finish

Polyurethane, varnish, and lacquer are tried-and-true sealants with fantastic waterproofing properties. This means that your Swedish timber will be protected and waterproof yet will still maintain a degree of authenticity in terms of appearance. Clear water-repellent finishes will protect and enhance for years to come.

Bleaching & Weathering Stains

Bleaching and weathering stains are used to, unsurprisingly, control the look of weathering and bleaching that occurs on the timber. Swedish Redwood responds well to bleaching and weathering stains and will leave you with timber that is protected against all weather conditions and the damage that this could cause to the natural wood.

Transparent & Semi-Transparent Stains

There are so many options available if you’d like to enhance the authentic grain of your Swedish Redwood timber. Swedish Redwood is a highly-attractive wood type, and we recommend using a transparent or semi-transparent stain to protect the wood, without covering the grain itself. What’s more, these types of stains last for many years.

Solid-Colour Stains & Paints

Solid-colour stains and paints take well to Swedish Redwood timber if you’d like to completely cover the wood grain. If you do choose to paint your Swedish timber, we recommend applying it over compatible oil-based primers. This type of finish is often used for furniture, wooden windows, doors, cladding and mouldings.
